SB 102 The SB 102 Field Specialist certification is a one-day certification course that certifies an individual’s ability to properly sample and test soils and flexible base properties in the field in accordance with TxDOT Test Procedures. There is no demonstration or training; individuals must come prepared to pass examinations of associated test procedures through demonstration, verbal and practical methods. Once the evaluations are successfully completed, a final written examination is administered. A score of 80% or higher is necessary to obtain certification. Test Procedures covered: Tex-100-E Surveying and Sampling Soils for Highways Tex-101-E Preparing Soil and Flexible Base Material for Testing (Part III) Tex-103-E Determining Moisture Content in Soil Materials Tex-115-E Field Method for Determining In-Place Density of Soils and Base Materials (Part I) Tex-140-E Measuring Thickness of Pavement Layer Tex-400-A Sampling Stone, Gravel, Sand, and Mineral Aggregates Tex-600-J – Sampling and Testing Lime (Part I) Re-certification Every three (3) years all SB 102 Field Specialists are required to re-certify. The re-certification course is a one day course. A Specialist can attend a re-certification class up to one year prior to the expiration date. If certification expires, Specialists will lose certification and be issued a new certification date upon completion of another SB 102 training and certification class.
