SB 201

The SB 201 Strength Specialist certification is a one-day certification course that certifies an individual’s ability to properly sample and test soils and flexible base for determining optimum moisture content by performing a moisture/density curve in accordance with TxDOT Test Procedures. There is no demonstration or training; individuals must come prepared to pass examinations of associated test procedures through demonstration, verbal and practical methods. Once the evaluations are successfully completed, a final written examination is administered. A score of 80% or higher is necessary to obtain certification.

Test Procedures covered:

Tex-100-E Surveying and Sampling Soils for Highways
Tex-101-E Preparing Soil and Flexible Base Material for Testing (Part II)
Tex-113-E Determination of Moisture-Density Relationships of Soils And Base Materials
Tex-114-E Laboratory Compaction Characteristics and Moisture-Density Relationship of Subgrade and Embankment Soils
Tex-142-E Laboratory Classification of Soils for Engineering Purposes
Tex-400-A Sampling Stone, Gravel, Sand, and Mineral Aggregates
Tex-600-J Sampling and Testing Lime (Part I)

Every three (3) years all SB 201 Strength Specialists are required to re-certify. The re-certification course is a two day course offered throughout the year at the HMAC. An SB 201 Strength Specialist seeking re-certification must call or email the Center to schedule the course.

A Specialist can attend a re-certification class up to one year prior to the expiration date. If certification expires, Specialists will lose certification and be required to attend the SB201 Training Course.

Federally Mandated Annual Proficiency
